Instead of doing something useful, the Quebec Bar took revenge on the person who criticised a close associate of the Quebec Bar and a client of the Bar president’s law firm
A response to the manipulations published in the local Sherbrooke (Quebec, Canada) newspaper, La Tribune (The Tribune), on July 23rd, 2026
Alexandra Captariu, LL.B.
On July 23rd, 2026, the newspaper The Tribune published an article about me titled "A lawyer disbarred after criticising a dean of UdeS on LinkedIn".
Reading this article, I learnt for the first time that there supposedly exists a decision from the Quebec Bar, which has not been published and which I did not receive, that would have been rendered by certain members of the Quebec Bar whose identities I do not know, in my absence, following an obscure process that these people would have held without my knowledge, following an alleged “demand for verification” from a person whose identity has been hidden from me and from the public. The Quebec Bar is also hiding the identity of this person who attempted to cause harm, but the public can easily imagine who is the person behind this matter.
The newspaper The Tribune did not contact me before the publication of this article and it did not offer me a right to respond.
So, here is my answer.
The claims of the Quebec Bar are erroneous and unfounded
My criticism was well-founded, well-deserved, and did not justify an investigation by the Bar
In September 2025, I exercised a fundamental right, guaranteed by the Quebec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms, to express myself and criticise the dean of the Faculty of law of the University of Sherbrooke (Canada), Marie-Pierre Robert, and her friend, the faculty secretary Josée Chartier, once it was publicly revealed that they had repeatedly and over a long period of time resorted to fraudulent schemes in the hiring of lecturers at the Faculty of law - not to mention the usurpation of the title of lawyer by this dean, a problem addressed here :
People like Marie-Pierre Robert and Josée Chartier, who hold positions that make them responsible for educating and training future representatives of justice, who must embody themselves the notion of justice, cannot serve as models of justice once their behaviour has been called into question through official documents from their own employer. Such people have no business to occupy such positions. To maintain them into such positions and to promote them call into question the quality of the education provided, the credibility of the law school, the credibility of the university, the credibility of the university professors that accept to be led by such people, etc.
The notion of justice is undermined when reprehensible people speak casually of justice and give lessons on what the notion of justice means, like the arsonist who educates future firefighters, teaching them about the importance of extinguishing fires, and then signing their firefighter certification.
Despite all this, Marie-Pierre Robert had come to speak to law students, of all things and in a cabotine fashion, about justice and access to justice.
Noting the lack of common sense, my comment was as follows :
“I am shocked to see the audacity of dean Marie-Pierre Robert and director of student affairs Josée Chartier from the Faculty of Law of the University of Sherbrooke to speak shamelessly of justice and access to justice, while these two individuals have actively participated and taken actions that have undermined the notion of justice.
It is also incredible that these two people are still in a position of authority.
But I understand that in Quebec, ‘impunity’ rhymes with ‘well-connected people’.
What a shame for the Faculty of law of the University of Sherbrooke to continue to promote these two managers.

From left to right : Josée Chartier (director of student affairs and secretary of the Faculty of Law of the University of Sherbrooke) and Marie-Pierre Robert (dean of the Faculty of law of the University of Sherbrooke)
I am particularly proud of having criticised them, especially in light of the fact that the rest of the profession often chooses to stay silent when speaking up would matter most. To quote Judge Claire L'Heureux-Dubé from the Supreme Court of Canada, who pointed out that "courage does not abound in the corridors of our court", I have no difficulty making the same observation regarding a significant number of lawyers and law professors in the province of Quebec (Canada).
The criticism regarding dean Marie-Pierre Robert and her accomplice was based on a meticulous factual demonstration, with arguments and supporting evidence coming from official documents and communications from the University of Sherbrooke, which clearly showed that Marie-Pierre Robert was blameworthy and that she had, among other things, violated the law and various collective agreement rules in the hiring of lecturers - a behaviour that has harmed countless lecturers over the years.
To date, to my knowledge, for more than four years, dean Marie-Pierre Robert has not publicly contradicted these elements.
The evidence and arguments supporting the conclusion that dean Robert deserved to be criticised were publicly available on Dr. Claudiu Popa’s professional platform, an expert in criminal law and former criminal lawyer (2013-2025), who taught as a lecturer at the Faculty of law of the University of Sherbrooke from 2012 to 2024, who has a fine knowledge about the irregularities that happen at the Faculty of law in Sherbrooke. Known in the Quebec legal and academic community for his integrity and professionalism, this expert has been trained on two continents (North America and Europe), in four different countries, holds a master's degree in criminal law, and two doctorates in Canadian and French criminal and penal law. He earned one of these doctorates from Marie-Pierre Robert’s Faculty of law of the University of Sherbrooke, and this, following the revelations about the fraudulent schemes perpetrated by Robert.
If Marie-Pierre Robert felt she didn't deserve to be criticised, she had a LinkedIn account, she could have replied to me directly there and told me why she disagreed with that comment. That's what a reasonable and responsible adult would have done, but she chose not to.
My comment also included the hyperlink to the professional platform that presented this demonstration with supporting evidence, which the newspaper The Tribune did not show to its readers, leaving the false impression that the comment was made without context and without support.
Here is the screenshot published by The Tribune :

Despite the fact that the public had abundant documentary evidence supporting my comment, and despite the undeniable clarity of the reference that I made to the shared article, the Quebec Bar pretended not to know what it was about or what the comment was based on (while having the comment with the hyperlink to the evidence in its possession - I know the Bar had it in its possession because the Bar itself sent it to me in the form of a screenshot), and sent an assistant syndic, Sébastien Dyotte, to essentially ask me what that comment was based on ...
Sébastien Dyotte. Source : LinkedIn
As it is often the case, the Bar did not open an investigation into the denounced individuals; the Bar opened an "investigation" into the denunciator.
It was more than obvious that Sébastien Dyotte was using a false pretext to launch a unjustified and unnecessary “investigation”, despite the fact that he clearly had everything he needed in his hands to see that my freedom of expression had been exercised in a reasonable manner that did not justify the opening of an investigation.
I provided a full response to the Bar
Despite the impertinence of Sébastien Dyotte's actions, as far as I am concerned, I collaborated to his so-called "investigation" and responded fully to his communication : I conveyed what I had to convey to him and I complied with Section 135 of the Code of Professional Conduct for Lawyers.
I informed Dyotte that the comment was based on information to which he himself had access - which was clear and credible information. This information could be found both in my comment, by consulting the attached hyperlink, and on several free digital search engines that were accessible to the public.
It is not serious for the Quebec Bar to pretend, as the Bar has pretended, that I would have prevented Dyotte in his “investigation” from discovering why Marie-Pierre Robert was criticable. On the contrary, such a pretense is ridiculous, a waste of time and money caused by the Quebec Bar.
Moreover, if Sébastien Dyotte were concerned with discovering the truth and was not just trying to cause trouble because I shared public information revealing corruption within the academic and legal systems - that displeased certain friends of the Quebec Bar's management - he should have only requested from the courts a copy of the judicial cases opposing Dr. Popa to the University of Sherbrooke and its Faculty of law managers. The article supporting my comment contained references to these court cases that Dyotte could have requested, but he never even mentioned them, at any point. Neither their content, nor the parties in dispute. Dyotte simply pretended not to see anything. These files clearly revealed the fraudulent schemes of the Faculty of law of the University of Sherbrooke’s managers, and if Dyotte had read those files, he could have seen the evidence of these schemes and revalidate, from an additional source, my criticism that such actions undermined the notion of justice. These cases were public and contained hundreds of pages of evidence, procedural documents, and written pleadings.
But Dyotte was a classic case of a biased and partial assistant syndic who did not like the response he received and resorted to diversion, pretending that the response "would not be complete" to camouflage his dissatisfaction and to make up a reason to complain about anyway, despite the fact that he was wrong.
Worse still is the fact that during these communications, I discovered that Sébastien Dyotte had a conflict of interest.
Sébastien Dyotte, a lawyer who had ties with Marie-Pierre Robert and Josée Chartier
I also investigated Sébastien Dyotte and discovered that, of all the assistant syndics and ad-hoc assistant syndics the Quebec Bar had at its disposal - and there are many - the Quebec Bar chose to send a graduate of the Faculty of Law of the University of Sherbrooke, someone close to the interest group "Jean Charest-Marie-Pierre Robert-University of Sherbrooke and company", a group whose interests were impacted by the litigation that revealed reasons for criticism.
Some members of the interest group “Jean Charest-Marie-Pierre Robert-University of Sherbrooke and company” : Pierre Cossette (then rector of the University of Sherbrooke, currently candidate for Jean Charest’s Quebec Liberal Party for the position of Member of the National Assembly of Quebec for the district of Sherbrooke), Marie-Pierre Robert and Jean Charest (grand ambassador for the University of Sherbrooke and former leader of the Quebec Liberal Party). October 2024 - during their legal disputes with Dr. Popa.
Among other things, Sébastien Dyotte had studied together with Josée Chartier at the Faculty of law of the University of Sherbrooke from 1995 to 1998 and was, at the time of his alleged "investigation," a member of the ADDUS association (the association of law graduates of the University of Sherbrooke) under dean Marie-Pierre Robert at the Faculty of Law of the University of Sherbrooke, while Dyotte was "investigating" comments that criticised Josée Chartier and Marie-Pierre Robert.
Sébastien Dyotte did not disclose to me his conflicts of interests, as he was obligated to do. On the contrary, he acted in a perverse manner, concealing his conflicts of interests, trying to present himself as objective and disinterested, while his actions and the instrumentalisation of his functions as a assistant syndic served the interests of the people with whom he had ties.
Once unmasked, Sébastien Dyotte should have at least delegated the case to someone else, which he did not do. On the contrary, he stubbornly remained on the case at all costs, even at the cost of becoming ridiculous.
In such a context, a lawyer’s obligation to collaborate with the Quebec Bar is not absolute.
In principle, in cases of bad faith, conflicts of interests, where assistant syndic’s desire to seek revenge or to harm is evident, abuse of power, influence peddling, corruption, harassment, potential criminal acts by the assistant syndic, etc., constitute (in a supposedly "free" society that is not yet completely a totalitarian society) limits to the obligation to continue to collaborate with such behaviour.
However, in practice, in such situations tainted by the syndic's conflicts of interests and marked by bad faith on the part of the syndic, the syndic's function is often instrumentalised to waste the targeted lawyers’ time, harass them, drain their resources, trap them in lengthy legal proceedings, and exhaust them financially, etc.
For a lawyer like me who had gained experience in the legal field, it was obvious that this was the case with Dyotte : I had responded to his communication, he had everything he needed to conduct "his investigation" (which he should never have opened) and find that there was no basis to refer the matter to the Bar's Disciplinary Council; he was acting in a conflict of interests and he refused to delegate the case to someone else when he was caught with his conflicts - a conduct unworthy of a justice officer and a professional order of lawyers such as the Quebec Bar, which, in my opinion, constituted an abuse of power, a conduct contrary to their ethical obligations.
I personally informed Sébastien Dyotte's superiors about this situation, the syndic of the Quebec Bar, lawyer Guy Bilodeau, the director of the Quebec Bar, lawyer Catherine Ouimet, and the president of the Quebec Bar, lawyer Marcel-Olivier Nadeau.
However, the management of the Quebec Bar was also close to Marie-Pierre Robert.

Marie-Pierre Robert, the long-time collaborator of the Quebec Bar, promoted by the Quebec Bar, who benefited from the Quebec Bar foundation’s money
Marie-Pierre Robert worked for the Quebec Bar for several years, within the Lawyers' Training Committee [1], providing advice, imagine that, on "issues related to the quality of lawyers' training" [2].
The Quebec Bar has often promoted Marie-Pierre Robert, repeatedly offering her thousands and thousands of dollars since 2012 through the Quebec Bar foundation to finance her "research projects" and allowing her to give conferences paid by lawyers, until 2025 inclusively :
Source : University of Sherbrooke
Paid conference given by Marie-Pierre Robert for the foundation of the Quebec Bar, October 2025 (Facebook).
The board of directors of the Quebec Bar foundation was chaired until 2026 by a lawyer from the Cain Lamarre firm, a colleague of the president of the Quebec Bar, Marcel-Olivier Nadeau, also from Cain Lamarre. The director of the Quebec Bar, Catherine Ouimet, was also part of this board of directors [3] that gave money to Marie-Pierre Robert.
In addition, because she placed herself as dean of the Faculty of law of the University of Sherbrooke, Marie-Pierre Robert has been working with the president of the Quebec Bar and the director of the Quebec Bar within the Quebec Forum on access to civil and family justice (a group that also includes several judges of the Court of Quebec, the Superior Court of Quebec, the Court of Appeal of Quebec, and others).
Source : Quebec Forum on access to civil and family justice, https://forumaccesjustice.quebec/membres/
Marie-Pierre Robert's husband, Sébastien Pierre-Roy, also worked for the Quebec Bar from 2021 to 2023. Her husband was appointed a member of the Discipline Council of the Quebec Bar by the board of directors of the Bar, which included the president of the Quebec Bar (Marcel-Olivier Nadeau) and the director of the Quebec Bar (Catherine Ouimet) [4], just before being catapulted to the position of judge at the Superior Court of Quebec in Sherbrooke by the Minister of Justice and law professor David Lametti - a former fellow professor of Marie-Pierre Robert.
Marie-Pierre Robert's husband, Sébastien Pierre-Roy, was appointed a judge in 2023 at the same court and in the same city where the legal cases concerning Marie-Pierre Robert’interests against Dr. Popa were beinng judged by her husband's colleagues.
Marie-Pierre Robert, the client of the Quebec Bar president’s law firm
Since the beginning of the cases opposing Marie-Pierre Robert and the University of Sherbrooke to Dr. Popa in 2022, for more than four years and despite all the blame that Quebec and Canadian judges have deserved so far for the unacceptable, biased, and unjust manner in which they have handled these cases, I cannot overlook the following : the fact that no court has fully satisfied dean Marie-Pierre Robert's need to declare that she did not use fraudulent schemes in the hiring of lecturers at the Faculty of law of the University of Sherbrooke.
These cases were not judged on their merits, they were blocked without legal basis before they could be tried on merit, for false procedural pretexts, by judges in conflicts of interests, close to Marie-Pierre Robert, close to her judge husband, close to other faculty managers responsible for these schemes (including Louis Marquis, also catapulted as a judge to the Superior Court of Quebec in Sherbrooke in 2024, and Sébastien Lebel-Grenier, placed as principle of Bishop's University in 2023) or close to Jean Charest (the grand ambassador of the University of Sherbrooke, former premier of Quebec, still a lawyer with influence in the Quebec Bar).
However, no one has exonerated Marie-Pierre Robert, not even her closest judges.
No judge dared to rule on the merits of these cases to say that their friend the dean, Marie-Pierre Robert, did not use fraudulent schemes, done on taxpayers’ money and students’ money, in the process of hiring lecturers - schemes that benefited lawyers from the Cain Lamarre firm that represented Marie-Pierre Robert in court.
On the contrary, the facts and evidence in these cases are clear and have revealed Marie-Pierre Robert’s obvious schemes - reprehensible acts of a law faculty dean, a law professor, who did not respect the rule of law.
That must have been frustrating for Marie-Pierre Robert.
Throughout this process of burying these legal cases, that took place between 2022 and 2025, it was the law firm Cain Lamarre that represented Marie-Pierre Robert and the University of Sherbrooke, a firm whose several lawyers had themselves benefited from Marie-Pierre Robert's hiring schemes.
In this context, in 2025, Marcel-Olivier Nadeau, a lawyer from the Cain Lamarre firm who had represented Marie-Pierre Robert in these contentious cases, suddenly emerged at the head of the Quebec Bar, to lead the Quebec Bar and trigger, shortly after his installation as president in June 2025, “checks” and “investigations” in September 2025 that targeted the lawyer who had denounced the reprehensible nature of the behaviour of his firm's client, Marie-Pierre Robert.

The Quebec Bar’s behaviour reveals its true face under the current management : a group of interests that helps its own
Not only were the Quebec Bar's actions useless, but the outcome of its actions was even more useless - to temporarily suspend the "practice" of a former lawyer, who had already resigned from the Bar and who had turned her back on the profession for reasons unrelated to the Bar’s actions, is to prove, as a Bar, an outrageous lack of discernment and a pitiful mismanagement of the justice system's resources.
The façade claims of supposed "protection of the public" do not convince anyone in this case. The Quebec Bar has shown in this case that it acts as an organised group that helps further private interests when someone reveals that people close to the Bar, whom the Bar finances, promotes, and presents to the public as role models, are shown to be not as venerable as the Bar claimed they were.
The Quebec Bar promoted Marie-Pierre Robert in various ways for over 10 years, placing her on its committees and contributing to the increase of her influence in the legal community, giving her money to support her ”research projects” and inviting her to give conferences paid by lawyers, thus contributing to her rise to positions of power, positions from which she was able to resort to the criticised fraudulent schemes, and which gave her powers that she then used to harm the person who denounced her for her fraudulent schemes and other reprehensible acts she committed. Moreover, the Quebec Bar lied publicly presenting Marie-Pierre Robert several times as a lawyer between 2018 and 2026, although she was not a lawyer member of the Quebec Bar since her resignation from the Quebec Bar in 2014.
The president of the Quebec Bar, Marcel-Olivier Nadeau, is paid nearly 300,000 dollars per year, and the director of the Quebec Bar, Catherine Ouimet, is paid nearly 400,000 dollars per year to protect the public, not to protect those close to them [5]. No one has heard these two rich people from the Quebec Bar focus on the real problems of the Quebec justice system that matter for the public, like denouncing corruption and judicial favoritism, denouncing the inappropriate interactions between lawyers and judges, who then judge their cases and give them victories one after the other, etc. I invite the current management of the Professional Order of Lawyers of Quebec to focus on real problems in the Quebec justice system and spend less time helping a close collaborator with her deanship problems.
Of course, when the Quebec Bar associates itself with such individuals such as Robert and promotes them to the public, the Bar violates its mission to protect the public, harms the public, betrays the public's trust, and becomes a vector that contributes to the corruption of the system, especially when the Bar seeks to divert attention from legitimate and public interest revelations concerning its close associates.
In such circumstances, the Quebec Bar is to blame for having promoted a blameworthy person, and after this was found out, instead of staying silent, this Bar chose to resort to a pretext to divert the attention from this and take revenge, even though this discredited the Bar and that it took the risk of making a laughing stock out of this institution.
The funding of The Tribune newspaper, managed by the colleague of the Quebec Bar president from the Cain Lamarre law firm and employee of Marie-Pierre Robert
While Marcel-Olivier Nadeau was placed at the head of the Quebec Bar, his colleague from the law firm Cain Lamarre and Marie-Pierre Robert’s employee, Stéphane Reynolds from Cain Lamarre, was placed at the head of the funding of the newspaper that published the article that targeted me.
Source : LinkedIn, https://www.linkedin.com/posts/gilles-carignan-mba-074081b9_st%C3%A9phane-reynolds-mettre-son-expertise-au-share-7480964626659164160-V2BV/ and https://www.claudiu-popa.com/commentaries-on-current-events-and-social-media-presence/stephane-reynolds-cain-lamarre-sherbrooke-la-tribune-les-coops-de-l-information-english.
Stéphane Reynolds is another close associate of Marie-Pierre Robert.
Marie-Pierre Robert is Stéphane Reynolds' employer at the Faculty of law of the University of Sherbrooke.
She hired him as a lecturer at the Faculty of law of the University of Sherbrooke for several years, from 2015 to 2019 and from 2024 to the present day. Moreover, Stéphane Reynolds taught at the Faculty of law while Sébastien Dyotte and Josée Chartier studied together at this faculty.
Marie-Pierre Robert was also the employer of several of Stéphane Reynolds' colleagues at Cain Lamarre, beneficiaries of Robert's fraudulent schemes (such as lawyer Charles Guay, who acted in the University of Sherbrooke’s legal cases and whose hiring served in court as a blatant example of violation of the collective agreement rules regarding the hiring of lecturers; his mother worked "her whole life" for The Tribune newspaper).
Marie-Pierre Robert was also Stéphane Reynolds' superior on the board of directors of the Eastern Quebec community legal centre (Legal aid of Eastern of Quebec in Sherbrooke), where she had been president since 2023 and Reynolds was an administrator [6]. In 2025-2026, Reynolds took over as chairman of the board and Robert became an administrator. The two have been working together as administrators of this organisation since 2019 [7].
Stéphane Reynolds’s recent involvement in traditional media is not accidental, it came in the context of his Cain Lamarre colleague’s public admission from 2024, on the Cain Lamarre’s website, that this law firm had created a network with "members of the media across Québec and around the world" to "serve their clientele" such as Marie-Pierre Robert :
“Over the years, we have forged an impressive network of contacts we can tap into to serve our clientele. Our legal professionals cultivate and maintain strategic relationships with municipal, provincial and federal politicians and elected officials, lawyers from other national and international firms, members of the media across Québec and around the world, and leading economic stakeholders.”
“Used wisely, this web of contacts can be helpful in finding legal solutions. It also enhances efficiency and serves as a powerful economic lever for many of our clients.” “The network is further strengthened by the active role our lawyers play in the social and economic life of the communities where the firm has roots and continues to develop today.”
- Gina Doucet
lawyer and executive director of professional practice
Cain Lamarre, 2023-2024
It was in this context that the article from The Tribune was suddenly published, targeting the opponents of Robert and Cain Lamarre (Reynolds, Nadeau, Guay, etc.), another form of revenge that came from this group of interests.
Decency and common sense usually teach that journalists who eat from the hand of Cain Lamarre's lawyers should not write stories against Cain Lamarre's opponents (or their clients).
Conclusion
It is clear to me that this clique of people who currently control the Faculty of law of the University of Sherbrooke and the Quebec Bar has instrumentalised these institutions in an effort to take revenge and to control the narrative in order to cover up criminality.
Beyond the above, I maintain my sincere belief, based on my professional experience as a lawyer and the evidence available in the court files, that Marie-Pierre Robert has not only "undermined the notion of justice", but that she should be subject to criminal investigations and eventually charges by the Director of criminal and penal prosecutions of Quebec, so that she may ultimately answer for her actions.
Marie-Pierre Robert should also be removed from her position as dean of the Faculty of law of the University of Sherbrooke.
As for the Quebec Bar, this type of political score-settling practiced by its management in this case has discredited the institution of the Professional Order of Lawyers.
The Quebec Professions Office, which describes itself as "a central actor in the Quebec professional system" whose "mission is to ensure that each professional order in Quebec protects the public" [8], should investigate the Quebec Bar, which, in this case, acted not to protect the public but rather to help its friends and to take revenge on its friends’ opponents.
